Known as the \u201cgateway to the Atlantic\u201d Vigo has grown from a fishing town into a <\/span>modern industrial city<\/b>. In the 19th century, it was the first city in Spain to install electric streetlights and also operated the first shipping line to Cuba, where many Galicians made their fortune.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vigo\u2019s passion for the sea is still thriving, and forms an essential part of its culture and its people. This is a city for exploring at leisure, taking your time to discover its landmarks. If you\u2019re planning to spend a few days in the city, <\/span>Vigo has several centrally located hotels<\/span><\/a> overlooking the tidal inlet that will make your visit truly enjoyable, as <\/span>there are countless things to do in and around Vigo.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What to do in and around Vigo on Saturdays<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When <\/span>visiting Vigo<\/b>, one option is to start in the west of the city and explore its <\/span>historic quarter<\/b>, <\/span>the port area and some of its beaches<\/b>, as well as the origins of this former fishing town.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Old City and the Port\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The<\/span> port area<\/b> boasts a number of striking sculptures, such as the Bather, the Merman and the Swimmer. Other sculptures pay tribute to the men and women that emigrated to America and Jules Verne. A<\/span> Pedra Market <\/b>is famous for its stalls selling oysters and the restaurants serving seafood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the narrow and winding streets of the historic quarter stands the <\/span>Co-cathedral of Santa Mar\u00eda<\/b>, built in the 19th century in the Neoclassical style. In <\/span>Constituci\u00f3n Square<\/b>, formerly known as the Plaza Mayor, we find the City Hall with its Neoclassical fa\u00e7ade. This is also the site of the <\/span>first<\/b> electric streetlight<\/b> to be erected in Spain. You will also find an intriguing stone carving at the corner of a hotel where you can see either the sun or the moon, depending on the angle you look at it from.<\/span><\/p>\n

Salinae<\/strong><\/h3>\n

An exceptionally well-conserved <\/span>archaeological site<\/b> that shows the only remaining marine salt flat from the days of the Roman Empire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Castro Castle (or San Sebasti\u00e1n Castle)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The building stands on top of <\/span>O Castro hill<\/b>, the original site of the city of Vigo, where the early human settlements can still be seen. It is the starting point for <\/span>Pr\u00edncipe Street<\/b>, the city\u2019s most popular shopping area. The street leads us to <\/span>the contemporary art museum, <\/b>MARCO,<\/span> a highly recommendable visit for everyone spending the weekend in Vigo<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ensanche<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is Vigo\u2019s most affluent district, and is characterised by its Modernist buildings. It is also filled with shops and museums. Another attraction is <\/span>La Alameda Park<\/b>, a small botanical garden that conceals a delightful stone zoo.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Guia Hill<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the top of this delightful natural setting stands the <\/span>Shrine of A Nosa Se\u00f1ora Das Neves<\/b>. This is another viewpoint offering sweeping views of the coastline.<\/span><\/p>\n

What to see near Vigo<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Moa\u00f1a<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the Maritime Station situated in the port, you can buy a ticket for a boat trip across the tidal inlet and back. The crossing takes 15 minutes and brings you to Moa\u00f1a, a small municipality that is ideal for relaxing <\/span>in its coves and on the beaches<\/b>, after visiting the <\/span>three lighthouses at Cape Home<\/b> or admiring the <\/span>Don\u00f3n Cliffs<\/b>, which rise up to a height of more than 150 m.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rande Bridge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is one of the <\/span>landmarks<\/b> of Vigo\u2019s tidal inlet. It connects Moa\u00f1a and Redondela and offers stunning views of the C\u00edes Islands and their magnificent scenery, not to be missed when exploring Vigo and its surroundings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Islas Atl\u00e1nticas Maritime-Terrestrial National Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Another absolute must for anyone spending the weekend in Vigo. <\/span>The C\u00edes Islands and Ons Island<\/b> are within easy reach of the city. The C\u00edes Islands are the site of <\/span>Rodas Beach<\/b>, considered one of the finest in the world, whilst Ons is suitable for camping as well as hiking.<\/span><\/p>\n
