Hercules Lighthouse: everything you need to know<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Tower of Hercules<\/b>, also referred to as <\/span>Hercules\u2019 Lighthouse<\/b>, is located in the Galician city of La Coru\u00f1a, in Spain. Fifty-five metres high, it is famous because it is the world\u2019s only working <\/span>Roman lighthouse<\/b> (as well as being the oldest). For this reason, it has been included on UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage list.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today it is considered as one of the country\u2019s <\/span>most popular tourist sites<\/b>, due to its outstanding historical value and interest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The History of the Tower of Hercules\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

To date, there is no documented evidence of the origins of <\/span>Hercules\u2019 Lighthouse<\/b>. However, it is known that it was <\/span>rebuilt by the Romans<\/b> between the 1st and 2nd centuries CE to guide the ships that sailed the western seaboard of their empire. Until the 20th century, it was known as <\/span>Farum Brigantium<\/b> and its construction is attributed to the Portuguese architect Gaius Sevius Lupus.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first mention of<\/span> Hercules\u2019 Lighthouse <\/b>dates back to the year 415 CE, when the writings of the day referred to \u201ca tall lighthouse that stood in the city of Galicia, Brigantium\u201d. It is also mentioned as \u201cpart of the route to Britannia\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lighthouse fell into disuse in the Middle Ages, but it was later used as a defensive element. The <\/span>first renovation of the tower dates back to the 17th century<\/b>, when a wooden staircase was built to reach the top. However, it was not until the reign of Charles III that it was completely rebuilt, following the designs of the Spanish engineer Eustaquio Giannini.<\/span><\/p>\n

An interesting fact about the <\/span>history of the Tower of Hercules<\/b> is that it is twinned with the <\/span>Statue of Liberty in New York<\/b>, USA and with <\/span>El Morro Lighthouse in Havana<\/b>, Cuba, the oldest on the American continent.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, if you\u2019re wondering how many <\/span>steps the Tower of Hercules<\/b> has<\/b>, the answer is around <\/span>230<\/b>, the equivalent of 2,215 footsteps. In other words, a climb to the top will burn off around 300 calories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, the site where the <\/span>lighthouse stands is a museum<\/b> where visitors can admire the works of several major artists, set against a natural backdrop.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tower of Hercules and its Legends<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Tower of Hercules<\/b> is shrouded in legend. One tale claims that the mythical hero Hercules who arrived here by ship and buried the head of a giant he had defeated in battle. Other historians believe that this may have been the site of the legendary <\/span>Breogan Tower<\/b>, associated with Irish mythology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tickets for the Tower of Hercules<\/span><\/h2>\n

Admission tickets for the Tower of Hercules <\/b>can be purchased at the <\/span>Visitor and Information Centre or online<\/b> at the lighthouse\u2019s official website. The general admission fee is 3 euros and the reduced rate is \u20ac1.50.<\/span><\/p>\n

Admission is free on Mondays<\/b>, but you must obtain a ticket from the sales office. Opening times are shorter in autumn and winter, from 9.45 to 17.00, but from June to September the tower is open from 10.00 to 21.00.<\/span><\/p>\n

It takes <\/span>around 40 minutes<\/b> to visit the tower, but if you require a guided tour, you should allow an hour. These tours are available at 12 noon and 16.00, although in summer there is an additional tour at 20.00. Numbers are limited.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re travelling from outside La Coru\u00f1a, we recommend you choose a hotel that is <\/span>within easy reach of the tower<\/b>. The <\/span>Hotel Attica21 Coru\u00f1a<\/span><\/a> is just <\/span>12 minutes\u2019 drive from the tower<\/b>. By bus, the journey takes around 45 minutes. What\u2019s more, if you\u2019re a sports fan and are fit enough to cycle up a steep slope, it will take you just 30 minutes by bike from the hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, if you\u2019re planning to visit the tower over <\/span>the Christmas season<\/b>, remember that both the offices and the lighthouse are closed on 24<\/span>th<\/span>, 25<\/span>th<\/span> and 31<\/span>st<\/span> December, as well as the afternoon of 1<\/span>st<\/span> and 5<\/span>th<\/span> January and all day on 6<\/span>th<\/span> January.<\/span><\/p>\n
